I noticed small fish near the bank the other day. I can't imagine they're fry of this year as it's only February and they seem too small to be last year's hatch. The pond was rebuilt and stocked in 2008 with LMB, BG, fatheads and golden shiners. I made a crude minnow trap and caught these. The smaller fish in about 1-1/4" and the larger is about 2-1/4". Any thoughts?

That's what I was thinking. Surprised they were so small. Is it possible the bluegill spawned late in the fall and the fry didn't have time to grow?

RobA!! Brother where have you been??!!!

I agree on the bluegill.

The first fish seems to be no more than a 1/2" long. I wonder how old it is.

The second fish from maybe a late, late summer-early fall BG spawn? In Pennsylvania???

Excerpt from Robert Crais' "The Monkey's Raincoat:"
"She took another microscopic bite of her sandwich, then pushed it away. Maybe she absorbed nutrients from her surroundings."

That is a common experience - not at all unusual to have late hatch BG that starve over winter up north.
