I've read a lot about whether or not to drain a pond after several years of intense usage and there seems to be various oponion....Will a draining, drying and refilling improve the water quality of a pond....?

Absolutely! Allowing a pond to drain, then "air out" is always part of the management plan for fish hatcheries. Of course, fish hatcheries have the luxury of shallow water, and plentiful water supplies. You may not have a good source of water. In most cases, the value of water outranks the value of draining a pond.
