I wanted to give followup on golden algae kills in ponds in N. Texas. As I stated (last Oct. 2006 in this forum), my pond (and many other ponds here in N. Texas) have had problems keeping fish alive because of the toxin from golden algae. Until I started placing barley straw in the pond, I was not able to prevent fish kills (100%) since 1998. I have now completed the second winter and now into the third year with no golden algae bloom since I started the barley straw program. I have bass, bluegill, black crappie and catfish (trout this winter) all doing great while virtually all other ponds in the area not using the straw have continued to have near total golden algae kills. Maybe the straw is the real deal and not just coincidental - it certainly appears promising and appears worth a try for any of you having the same problem in your ponds. (My pond: 1 1/3 acres, brackish, aerated, clear, 13 feet deep, ph >7.0)

JKM - Good info. How much straw and how often are you placing fresh straw in the pond? Are you stuffing straw into porous bags?

Thanks for the follow up. Long term results/info on topics really help others assess and deal with problems. I have moved the topic to Controlling with Unwanted Plants so we can find it easier.

That's great! Like Bill says, how about the recipe?
I hear that Possum Kingdom Lake has been hit hard again.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.
