I have FA growing in my pond, I will be purchasing some cutrine plus, I would also like to add the dye (maybe this one) http://cgi.ebay.com/AQUA-DOC-Blue-Lake-P...tem200086791465 (Any other dye suggestions are welcome) My question is can i put these two things in at the same time? BTW My pond isn't quite an acre Maybe 1/2 to 3/4 but is 4-13 foot deep at diff. locations of the pond. Any advice on what and how much to use will be much appreciated.

welcome to PB,
there are others here with (much) more experience than i, but i've been getting the impression that if fish and fishing are part of yer pond objectives, you need to be really careful using dyes......they can disrupt beneficial plankton blooms and low parts of food chain.

Thanks for the reply, I really had no clue. WOuld yall suggest just the cutrine plus to kill the algea still, The pond isn't really in severe need of dye anyway, i just thought it looked pretty.

my suggestion until someone else chimes in here is to conduct a search on PondBoss.

if you havent done this already, select the "search" button at top of page and plug in the word or words you want to research (i.e. "cutrine" and search this "*unwanted plants" forum) you should find a lot of posts with good info....

You can use them both at the same time-no harm will come.

Thanks for the reply, I applied the cutrine, and it was effective The FA is dead, I applied some fertilizer and dye a week later. another question i would have is how long does it take for the FA to vanish once the cutrine plus is applied? It is all brown and stuff and breaking apart and not nearly as bad but it is floating around the pond now and pretty ugly.

Depends on a lot of things...cooler the weather, the slower break down. Generally, 5-7 days should be enough.

I don't understand the usage of dye and fertilizer at the same time. Fertilizer needs light penetration to do any good for the creation of a planktonic base and dye retards light penetration.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

I would hold off on the dye until you have a good understanding of the biology of a pond and how that fits with your goals. I assume you have fish and that is a major purpose of the pond. I will find an excellent thread on dye and add it. BTW south La is not the Midwest or Northeast in so far as summer reactions in a pond. You are much more likely to have summer DO problems in your location if you use dye and are not aerating. Dye is often at cross purposes with either aeration or fertilization as Dave notes.

Dyes an outstanding thread by KD and Bill and others.
