It depends on what chemicals you are testing, how often you are making tests, and how accurate one needs the results. IMO in most cases good and adequate water tests for the average pond owners can be obtained from pet shops who sell testing supplies to serious aquarium enthusiasts.

I use the API Freshwater Master Test Kit. $25 or less.
Cody Note - be advised this kit does not test for alkalinity nor total hardness.

I have heard this kit well recommended, should i also be testing for alkalinity and hardness> My lake is at least 75 years old. one acre. no telling what is in it, nor condition. i do see 10-12 inch bass and some bream.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

If growing higher quality good sized fish nor wanting a decent plankton bloom are not the main goals then testing the water is not critical if you see fish, critters, and/or bugs living in the pond. Presence of aquatic life indicates adequate water quality for most general types of recreational and casual fishing ponds.
It is a good idea to know and have WRITTEN down the basic water chemistry such as pH, alkalinity, total hardness. Very few pond owners ever write down or fully remember details of the baseline information. Then when water quality problems occurs you have an idea how much change occurred in the basic water chemistry and can better look for answers.

I don't know how far distribution is for Ritter's Lumber company and Ace Hardware but our local Ritters does free computerized analysis which included Alkalinity and hardness. Lucky for me it is only 6 miles down the road.
