I have recently became interested in stocking tilapia in my Iowa pond after seeing a lot of encouraging benefits here and elsewhere online. Problem is (legally) you need a permit. The other day I reached out to Alan Johnson with the DNR inquiring about the possibility of putting tilapia in my pond. He said he has never approved a permit for tilapia in Iowa and has only had one other request. I'm thinking the lack of requests could be contributing to his decision and lack of knowledge on the subject. Anyways he is being very receptive to the idea and wants more info as to the benefits of tilapia in a farm pond. Problem is I am having a hard time finding any credible information for him i.e. university studies or case studies from other states. Please if anyone knows where I could find this info it would be greatly appreciated!!
Also if you are from Iowa (or not, who cares!) and are interested in tilapia in your pond or in helping out please contact Alan at alan.johnson@dnr.iowa.gov and let him know your feelings. If enough people show interest who knows what we could accomplish.

Slurp, I will send you a private message as there are no university studies in using Tilapia in sportfish settings, but many other states do use them in public waters
