We set a record earlier this month for no rain. Absolutely no rain for the first 11 or 12 days of the month, which broke a 125 year old record. Then comes yesterday, I had hoped that we would get rain here, the rain that came on Friday only was a drop in the bucket where North and South of me had close to 2 1/2" of rain.

I asked for it and I got it. I really, really wish I would have taken a picture of the pond/pier on Sunday, when the pond was about 60" low from full pool earlier this year.

We had light rain start at 11am yesterday, then heavier rain started around 5 pm. When the rain stopped at 11pm, I had 8 1/2" of rain come down. Sometime after midnight and before 6am I had another 5/8" rain. That is double the total the average August rainfall amount in 12 hours of rain.

The pond didn't have any runoff from the neighbors going into it at midnight, but this morning the 10" culvert was full and flowing pretty fast. As of noon today the pond had another 10" to go before overflowing itself. BIG change in 24 hours!!!

We are DRY! went from flooding rains around here, to nothing. Since June we have gotten very very little. I would say less than 3" since June 1st.
8" rain will fill things up in a hurry! I got a 10" rain after we built our pond and it filled almost overnight.

That's a lot of rain! I remember back in 1993 my dad's old pond received 9-1/2" of rain in 24 hour period, it is the only time I remember the emergency overflow (low spot in the dam) ever overflowing and it was running river. I hope your BIG change goes well.

In fact I made a post yesterday with no feedback, I have a 8 inch inlet and there was so Much water coming in the inlet was submerged at one point and the bank of pond where inlet is dumping is eroded the clay severely. I just hope my 8 inch outflow pipe can keep up at full pull I would hope the emergency spillway doesn't get used at first pool

Congrats Scott...those millennial rain events sure seem to be occurring with more frequency.

You are correct. I checked NOAA for the midwest area 1971-2000 on their website and they show 1.5 more days per year with heavy downpours. The same data set shows longer periods of dryness on average between rains as well as higher total rainfall for the midwest over the same time period. Put them all together and it means more big dumps with less in between.
E.g.

NOAA historical data for 1971 - 2000.
