Neighbor caught over 25 SMB in our pond today, including 2 fish at the same time on a single hard bait..

I just saw this on FB.

Didn't know that was you, RAH.

I posted this a couple places. Really happy that all the good advice I got here has resulted in a great outcome, I moved 5 small SMB to the LMB pond even though I know that they are highly unlikely to successfully spawn.

Great job RAH. I don't covet much in this world, but yellow perch and SMB are 2 fish I really wish we could have down here.

Nice looking smallies RAH. Those are from different generations, correct? So you’ve had some recruitment?
I’m going to start keeping some this year. We’ve kept very few through the years.
They are a blast to catch, that’s for sure.

9 yr old pond, 1 ac, 15' deep.
RES, YP, GS, FHM (no longer), HBG (going away), SMB, and HSB (only one seen in 5 yrs) Restocked HSB (2020) Have seen one of these.
I think that's about all I should put in my little pond.

Agree with SetterGuy, those are great looking smallies RAH!

I also like your idea to move a few of the SMB over to your LMB pond. Who cares if they reproduce there. They do occupy a little different niche than your LMB, so I think you can carry a slightly higher total weight of predators.

Hopefully, you can have someone catch a 5#+ SMB out of your LMB pond in a few years!

If it is a kid, just imagine the smile after all of the work required to get that SMB on the bank. grin

Very nice smallmouth bass from your pond. Where did you buy the original stocker smallies??

Bill - I got 10 SMB stockers from Jones, and 10 from Clear Creek. Hoped that they might have different genetics. They were stocked in consecutive years for a total of 20 fish. Looks like that worked out well.

Great SMB RAH! Especially the first one. What a fatty. They seem to be enjoying the forage base of LCS and YP.

The monsoon has arrived and is keeping me from chores, so I've been fiddling at removing BG from the cow pond.

I've put ~40 <9" in the cage over the past two days. Yesterday I caught and released two that were >10", along with
three RES that were right at 11" if not a bit over. One of the RES was a bit odd on the topside. Possibly an old injury
that has healed up?

Mr. Water Snake got stuck in the B trap and drowned yesterday. Didn't take long for QA's crayfish to find him. Think
I'll let the trap soak until the snake has been consumed. I'm curious to see how many I can catch on one snake. lol

Wow Augie, my RES have been stocked since April of 2015, and I’ve never seen one that big. We have a lot of them, but I haven’t caught many that I would even consider cleaning. We haven’t seen but one snake this year, and two snapping turtles that decided not to stay around.

Augie I'm looking for a way to harvest a bunch of CC this year. I'm interested in that trap of yours. You call it a B trap. Is it purchased or home made?

My thinking is some sort of trap that I can leave open ended, put feed into it daily through maybe a piece of PVC pipe from the surface on the dock, then when the CC get used to getting fed in it close the trap end off. That is how it works in my minds eye. How it would actually work I don't know.

Anyone with good ideas to harvest CC with minimal effort would be appreciated. We like to fish for them but catch a few and I think they send out a signal or something for the others to quit biting. I would like to get 10 or 20 at a time so we can clean a bunch at once.

I bet I have a hundred, for sure at least 50, that I should remove this year. I see lots all around the pond when I feed. Lots in the 2-3# range and I see one every now and then maybe around 4#. Time to get them out and invite them to dinner.

That wound on the top of the RES looks like to be an old Great Blue Heron strike.

snrub - Visualize a B trap as half of a cloverleaf trap. Maybe not the right tool for catching catfish. My Grampa Wilkie used a lot of slat traps when he
fished commercially on the Missouri River. He built his own, but they were very similar to this one:

esshup - Heron strike seems likely. There are several of those nasty things that pond hop the neighborhood every day. Mrs. Augie likes them.
She thinks they're "pretty", and has made it clear to me that if anything bad happens to one of them, and she finds out about it, somebody is
gonna be in big trouble, so they get a pass.

I come from a financial background, so my wife puts it this way: "Shoot those birds, and there will be a bear market in the domestic tranquility index!"

I get the message.

Couple of good videos associated with the traps. Thanks!

I spent the whole day mowing at the farm yesterday, but not around the pond. I got to the pond for a few minutes, and I did notice that all the little black toad tadpoles are gone. They must transform into toads very quickly. Either that or they are hiding in the pond weed. The pond weed is taking off again this year. I suspect I’ll eventually end up with it all the way around the pond. Hope it helps my YP fry to survive.

One grass carp will easily eat 4 to 6 times or more that amount of American pondweed. Age of GC makes a difference as to how much it eats per day or year. When those plants encircle the pond consider adding 1 grass carp to thin it out but not eliminate the pondweed. This is a very good habitat plant for the small fish. The plant growing along the edges also competes with filamentous algae and helps reduce amount of FA along the shoreline.

Thank you! I didn’t know it helped reduce FA. That’s very good news. I’ll add one GC once the pond weed gets all the way around the pond.
Thanks again.

I like the level of pondweed showing in your picture. Too bad you can't just wave a magic wand and set the level at exactly the correct amount of cover for your small fish!

P.S. I also like your forest pond look! But then again, my property is in the middle of the prairie.

The trees are a mixed blessing. They look great, and there is always a shady spot on the pond. But they also pull a lot of water, and drop a lot of leaves and pollen. We love them though. They block a lot of the wind, and we don’t have aeration, so I worry about a fish kill, but so far so good.
This is just the second year for the pond weed. Hoping it doesn’t get out of control. If it really picks up there will be one grass carp in the pond.

After several years of a reprieve from curly-leafed pondweed in my smb/yp pond, it appears to be coming back with a vengeance. I thought that the papershell crayfish had it under control, but with so few submerged plants over the last few years, perhaps the smb knocked them way back? Hopefully, the crayfish population will build back up and a balance will be reached, rather than boom-and-bust cycles.
