Found a big (12-14") BG dead along pond. Looks like a heron stabbed it, Very fat. Pond seems healthy based on fish condition.

Family enjoyed the day messing around on the pond. I caught two small BG with a live grub in a matter of minutes. Minnows are everywhere. Water temp is 65 degrees. 15-20" water clarity. Will be putting in LMB, HBG, CNBG and RBG next weekend.

I've caught one muskrat since I put the traps out last week. It might have been the only one in there. Water clarity is noticeably improved over the past few days.
Placed 8~ cubic yards of rip-rap stone over the weekend, and started filling in the low spots with top soil. I hope to have the landscaping on the dam finished by
the end of summer. I put a few pics of the progress on my renovation thread. I think it's going to look nice when I'm finished.

Placed 20 dozen golden shiners in my virgin pond along with pond muck from a local pond. Going to place a 25' downed tree in that location for habitat.

I finally got a really nice algal bloom yesterday - in the kiddie pool I keep in the dog yard!

Of course, the dogs drink almost exclusively from that pool rather than their nice bowl of clean city water.

If I bottle and sell the pool water as 100% organic, nutrition supplemented artisanal dog water, do you think I can raise enough money to start excavating some more ponds at our farm?

It would have gone faster if I had an excavator, but all I had was a FEL on the tractor. If the test works, I'll rent an excavator and put in some 1/20th - 1/10th acre ponds to raise some fish that aren't commonly easily found on the pond stocking market.
esshup, 6,048,000 +or- gallons at full pool

Hi! Newbie here! Can I ask a question? I went into a bait store to buy fatheads for a new pond...they laughed at me!!!!!
Why does every country man tell me my minnows won't "make it"?
I ended up buying ruby reds, because the fatheads I bought through the mail died on my porch...and put them in last week since the water is not hot from summer yet.
Is there a secret I do not know?
I am just trying to establish a food source for future fish and healthy ecosystem boost. And your ponds are all large and beautiful compared to my pond!

All natural! So many people equate natural with good, but it isn't always. Mosquitoes, leeches, toadstools, droughts, are all natural.

The guy at the bait store was correct, The fatheads probably won't make it past 1 year, maybe 2 if you are lucky. BUT, that is what they are supposed to do - get the pond started on the correct foot. What he neglected to tell you is that the Rosy Reds are Fatheads too, just of a different color.

East Texas, Piney Woods. About an hour from The Woodlands
I did have a fish farm mail me some (like a dumbass) and they came two days early with no notice so they were sitting in the heat on my porch while I was at work!
My pond is only 13 feet deep, and maybe 50 feet across.
Nothing like what all of you have!

The fish farm that sent you those without a notice or tracking number to let you know when they will be arriving, almost down to the hr was extremely irresponsible, I would be having a little chat with them.
Your pond is beautiful, plenty of people on here have ponds like yours. Welcome to the forum!

I would like some advice from the group. We normally put weed and feed on our yard (ponds watershed). Is this okay to get up close to the ponds edge? How far away is advised if not next to it? Also it could be good for it I really dont know. The package says as long as it dosnt rain in 24 hours is how I'm reading it. I purposely cropped out the brand. I'm not here to promote it but it does kill them weeds pretty good. I'm sure this has been discussed on here before but this is what I'm doing around the pond.

I have no idea. The areas that we treat out here are big so it is more cost effective to use fertilizer then hit it with a herbicide.

"Aquatic Use and Considerations

2,4-D is a widely-used herbicide that affects plant cell growth and division. It affects primarily broad-leaf plants. When the treatment occurs, the 2,4-D is absorbed into the plant and moved to the roots, stems, and leaves. Plants begin to die in a few days to a week following treatment, but can take several weeks to decompose. Treatments should be made when plants are growing.

For many years, 2,4-D has been used primarily in small-scale spot treatments. Recently, some studies have found that 2,4-D moves quickly through the water and mixes throughout the waterbody, regardless of where it is applied. Accordingly, 2,4-D has been used for whole-lake treatments.

2,4-D is effective at treating the invasive Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum). Desirable native species that may be affected include native milfoils, coontail (Ceratophyllum demersum), naiads (Najas spp.), elodea (Elodea canadensis) and duckweeds (Lemna spp.). Lilies (Nymphaea spp. and Nuphar spp.) and bladderworts (Utricularia spp.) also can be affected."

Rusto, I am not an expert, but I do still use my college chemistry at my real job.

I couldn't find the product label for your bag. However, most of that type of product use 2,4-D as the main broadleaf herbicide.

From the quote above, you can see the 2,4-D is used as an aquatic herbicide. I ran the math on some products similar to yours. A 40# bag of weed and feed contains about a 1/4# of 2,4-D. The maximum treatment rate for ponds is 4# per surface acre of pond.

You could probably dump 16 bags straight into a 1-acre pond. (At least as regards the 2,4-D content.)

This makes sense, otherwise every river downstream of a city with abundant lawns would suffer massive fish kills every spring.

WARNING
This is just one "non-expert's" calculation based on similar products. I think the product should be safe for Rusto to use on the grass around his pond if he follows the product use instructions. Further, the longer it stays on his grass and weeds prior to a rain event, the lower the concentration of the product that will make in into the pond.

There are many herbicides that are highly toxic to fish. I use some of them on invasive trees at my farm, and do everything possible to keep them from entering the water system.

Today was LMB stocking day... 5 2+lb LMB, 20 4-5" LMB fingerlings, 100 Readear and another grass carp was added. For the past month, been watching the BG and FHM in the pond.. The pond has a great many FHM and somewhere around 120 various sizes of BG. As soon as I can get Hybrid BG and CNBG, I'll be adding 100 of each.
Y'all have a great weekend and send some rain my way...

Back to 2 4-D.

Weedar 64 is what I use around the the edge of my pounds. It's aquatic friendly. I also use Navigate granular to help keep pond areas clear of emergent plants, and it's 2 4-D product as well.

Rod the plan is to put on my yard. Not in the pond. You are a researcher for sure lol. All those different numbers is to much for my simple mind. Dad always told me some are blessed with strong minds and weak backs. Some have weak mind and strong back. Some are blessed with both. I'm pretty sure I know which one I'm am.

Bought shiners from Todd Overton to see what’s in the pond . Removed a bunch of small bass . Caught a handful of BCP, one 5lb LMB and got broke off 3 times with really big something...... that usually doesn’t happen to me. Bad thing was the bullheads! How they got in I don’t know but those two left the lake..... fun day

Sorry Rusto, I knew you were putting it on the yard!

I was trying to make the point that if 100% washed off of the yard and into the pond it would probably still be safe.

[Pro tip to FishinRod - When trying to make an informative point in a post, you should ACTUALLY type out your point!]

I like reading your posts, because you are doing all of the things on your pond, that I hope to be doing on my ponds in a few years.

You have no reason to apologize to me. I like how you research and understand things. Just sometimes over my pea brain lol. I was taking that tou thought I was putting it in the pond. You was saying that basically I could and shouldn't hurt anything.

Bottom diffusers are up and running. Gradually started them up and now at 8 hrs per day. I plan on going to 12 hrs per day. I will do that over the next few days. A few years ago I doubled the run time every day and when I went from 8 hrs to 16 it killed off some fish so I don't do that anymore.
