Hi all
I'm Filippo from Italy. I apologize for my poor english but I will try to make me understand.
I have a 320 acres farm here with a 1 acre rectangular pond stocked with LMB, BG, CGC, Crucians, Mosquitofishes and some catfishes.
I think it's about 70 years old and never been dredged/cleaned in the last 40 years.
The depth is mostly about 6 and 7 feet.
I found this wonderful forum looking for tips and hints on how to remove silt from the pond and deepening it. Here there's not the culture of the farm pond, so I can t get any help or knowledge around.
I hope to get some here from you pros.
Thank you in advance

Filippo

Welcome to the forum!

We have some members from other non-English speaking countries and we get our point across just fine. Your English is 1,000 times better than my Italian!

There are a few different ways to clean out the pond.

1) Drain it or pump out the water, use an excavator to dig out all the accumulated muck/dirt/sediment, and refill.

2) Use a big pump like a vacuum cleaner to suck out the muck/dirt/sediment and put the water in a large dewatering bag. That lets the water go back to the pond, but filters out all the solids and keeps it in the bag.

Thank you for your welcome esshup!
I really hope to get rid of sediments without draining the pond (for many reasons I'll try to explain in a new thread on "help" forum) thanks to your help.

Hi Flippo, A dredge is the most cost effective way to clean the bottom of an existing pond. I have no idea in your area what it would cost, however try to find at least two companies to get quotes from. Let the muck dry out and test it, you should be able to add it to compost. Or sell open market.
