We have been in yellow perch business for a few years now and are constantly running into problems. We hatched out close to 2 million eggs in 3 ponds with constant groundwater flowing through them. We have seen awesome #'s of fish at night with our lights and our boat, but just within the last few days are starting to notice dead fish around the edges of the ponds, stuck in the moss, etc. We believe that the algae problem may be killing them. We have plenty of oxygen lines with diffusors on them. Is it possible for these 1/2 to 3/4 inch perch to be getting caught in the moss and not being able to get back out? We are desperately looking for a way to get rid of the algae without hurting our fish. We recently put grass carp in, but how long do they take to show results in the ponds? Is there any possible chemical application that can be used without killing the fish? We are very puzzled and would like to get something done in a hurry to prevent any more from killing over. Very interested in any of your thoughts. Thanks for the input.

Identify what it is, what type weed or is it a algae. There are many products that will kill the "fish killer" plants if idetified and applied correctly. BTW Grass carp are not very effective on filamentous type algae which it sounds like you may have.

There is a filamentous algae that can entangle fish it is called Hydrodictyon common name 'fish net algae'. As Greg says, Identify it first, then deal with it.
