If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

I caught my first BG on the ND campus when I was in third grade. Released a Black duck found frozen in marsh on campus- 1951[ about 3rd grade] Dad was stationed there teaching ROTC That brings back old hunting and fishing memories. Merry Christmas from balmy Virginia

Bill D. Yes, pear is fine for firewood. I've added some while gas grilling and like the flavor it imparts to food. Of course, let it age and dry out before you use it for smoking.

Thank you for the input! I know you are a tree pro and was hoping you would see this post! Weather permitting, I will head down to pick up a load next week and put it in one of the curing racks for a year or so.

I like pear [except bradford pear] for smoking pork, fish and poultry - and have used it when cold smoking cheese. Imagine it's a lot like Apple wood and would be dense enough to enjoy in the firebox.

I go back to the Days of ND football in the 50's when Hanratty was the quarterback, Notre Dame & Michigan State were #1 & #2 and tied in a 10 to 10 tie when they played. The next week in the final game of the year Notre Dame beat #3 Southern California 56 to 0 at USC. If those numbers aren't exact they are close. Notre Dame gave up only 23 points for the whole year. Again if not exact, close. I think THAT Notre Dame football team was the best team that ever existed in collage football.

What year was it? Michigan State and Notre Dame were playing for the national championship. Notre Dame scored at the end of the game and was one point down. A field goal for a tie and 2 points to win. The Coach, Ara Parshegian, went for the tie. A day that will live in football infamy because he didn't try to win.

Pond is covered in gin clear ice. I don't know how thick it is but I just watched 2 foxes run across it in the light from the pump house floodlight. Sleet, rain and/or snow supposed to start tomorrow night and run thru the weekend. I don't think we are supposed to get that much total though. Temps near zero next week. I fired up the tractor today and moved firewood from a drying rack to the 1/3 cord capacity box in the garage. Have another half cord left in the rack under the roof on the deck. We don't heat with wood but I love a good fire in the fireplace when the weather is bad. I work from home so let it come!

Today was our first full day with all the ponds covered in thin ice. It was 8F/-13C when I took the trash out to the main road this morning. It got to about a high of 30F/-1C this afternoon. I believe this is the coldest day we've seen since last winter.
This is the latest I've ever seen ice form. We still haven't seen any snow. Most years I start plowing snow in October. I mowed the lawn, and around two of the ponds, late last week. That too is a record for me, except during my Navy days in California and Hawaii.
Anyway, it is great to see the photos posted above.

Was hoping to escape some of the cold/snow and icy roads for a few days. Heading to a factory in Liberty, KY tomorrow. Just checked their weather and it's 17°F right now. When I head into the plant Wed. morning, not gonna be much warmer and snowing. Found out earlier today that the factory is not heated Was told if you want heat, bring a heater. Got one! Also told me that ear plugs don't work, so if you got some good shooting mickey mouse ears, bring those, and maybe put some ear plugs under them as well Got all that, but after hearing about all that, I'm gonna bring a wireless router and maybe just sit in my truck with the heat running, hot cup of coffee and maybe some really soft music playing A decent wireless router could save the day

Thanks Bob!! Yep, many nice contributions to that thread!
Esshup sent me a text and said once you get south of South Bend, roads are nice. Michigan will probably be the slow leg of the trip.
I have an aunt and 2 cousins in KY that I haven't seen since they lived in MI, at least about 30 years ago, so may try hook up for a visit. I have Johnny's number, and he lives in Pikeville, about 200 miles east from where I'll be.
See how it goes.

Earplugs will work in cold temps, your body heat keeps them pliable. You got to know how to properly insert them.
Ear plugs and muffs will help when it's really loud, but communicating with someone is difficult.
One place I worked we had earmuffs attached to the hard hats. You had to yell at one another with your face about a foot from the other guy to be understood. 200+Ton mechanical forging presses made a LOT of noise.

Been talking to one of the guy's down here and it sounds like it's gonna be a fun day. I gotta find a car wash tomorrow. I think I brought all the road salt and sand from MI and IN down here. Had to stop 3 times in MI just to wash the windows and mirrors so I could see. Seriously, I could not see a darn thing thru the side windows and mirrors. It was terrible driving!!! After going thru Louisville and Indy, I'll never complain about traffic in GH again.

Makes you appreciate what you have at home. +1 I spent the best part of 14 years living 50 miles from the equator. 14 years of a forecast that was high in the 80s/low 90s, lows in the high 70s and 60 % chance of rain for every single dang day! I could not wait to get back to 4 seasons!

Think we finally have enough ice to put a big pile of branches out on the pond for more structure. Think I'll wait for the somewhat warmer temps tomorrow though.

Got that big pile of spruce branches out on the pond ice this evening. Not exactly helping my wife clean (for those following the now closed thread), but she did help me. Should be another place for YP eggs in spring.

They're calling for a big storm rolling in next Tuesday here, yet it's supposed to be 50's on Saturday. In the meantime I captured this beautiful sunset last night.

Beautiful pic Lovinlivin!
