hello i am new here and new to owning ponds. this floating vegetation has just about taken over my pond. can anyone tell me what it is and how can i get rid of it? i know the picture is kind of fuzzy but it has a gelaton type of texture, and looks almost like a brain or ground meat. sorry for the weird description but thats the best way i can describe it.

Welcome to the forum Cory!
I'm a fish guy, and not a vegetation guy. Somebody may recognize it, but the photo maybe could be a little clearer.
Good luck.

Just a guess cory, but it looks like filmentous algea (FA) to me. When it gets warm and sunny the FA floats on the surface.

Cory...was it green at one time and is now turning brown? If you stir it around, does it move in a clump or does it fall apart?

it seperates some and from what i can tell it is always brow. when you move it, it looks like strands of ground meat.

Those shots of it on your hand sure look like FA. See the Archive FA thread.

It doesn't appear to be the typical filamentous algae that most pondowners have. From your description and since it looks like there is a good amount of gelatinous texture to it, it it could be one of the filamentous bluegreen algae such as Nostoc or Nodularia or possibly a species of Anabaena that forms gelatinous "globs". For a positive identification it needs to be examined with a microscope by someone familiar with algae. The gelatinous nature will likely make it difficult to kill with chemicals because the chemicals will have a difficult time penetrating the gelatinous coating.
