The learning, the time, the effort and the investment all pay off in different ways. But this morning, it was all about the fish grin

All 5 caught this morning between 7:38 - 8:08. What an adrenaline rush and great way to start the day!

A pond record, 23" HSB

18" LMB

8.5" BG

18.5" HSB

17.5" LMB

19" HSB

I wasn't able to get weights as my digital scale was weighing everything at 1.51 lbs. Obviously there's a problem!

Any WAG's on an average weight for a 23" HSB?

Thanks, snrub!

Canyoncreek they were all caught on a pellet-fly.

Seems to be the only way I can wrangle in a HSB, but to land 3 in one morning is a first for me, let alone a couple nice LMB!

pellet fly? so i see some yarn flies that are brown on the google search, is that what you use? Google search showed some interesting ideas.

I like this one, handrigged using a larger, ACTUAL pellet and a strong rubber band see attached file.

Just found Cecil's link on this and will share it for all to see. Thanks Cecil!

remember to attach the hook through the 'nipple' per the instructions on this page...

Thanks, Bob-O & Bobby!

CC, the photo you attached is the first time I've seen that method! Very cool! And thanks for sharing the link!

On mine I do use an actual pellet, the AM LMB pellet (3/4" diam). I then tie panty hose around it and put the circle hook through the panty hose opposite of the nipple. If I hook it through the nipple, the nipple faces down and I don't have as good of luck.

But then again I tend to catch more when I'm wearing a short sleeved shirt opposed to long sleeve smile , and even better luck when I'm wearing my sandals instead of going barefoot grin .

The non-pond owners just don't understand laugh

Lovin with having HSB and LMB in your pond do you see the HSB bringing you LMB stock down with competing for food and eating the LMB fry? I have a 1 acre pond 25ft deep was thinking of stocking HSB and LMB in the same pond like you. What would you recommend??

Hi Dinsmore,

I'll leave recommendations to the experts, which I'm certainly not, but at 3 years I'm very happy with the results of HSB and LMB growth, as well as the BG. I feel I have a very good balance right now and I continue to manage the LMB by removing all under 12" (unless they carry a high WR).

My pond is 2 acres with 80% at 4-5' depth, 20% at 8-9'and with limited cover.

For me personally after stocking 3 years ago, to be catching 4+ lb LMB, 19"-23" HSB and BG exceeding 10", I couldn't be happier!

Is it because of water quality, aeration, cover/structure or lack thereof, aggressive feeding program, management techniques, etc.? I know they all contribute in one way or another but I owe thanks to where it is now to the help, advice and suggestions I got from these great folks on PB!

But as a side note, IMO there is no (pond) fish that will put up a better fight than the HSB!

So lay out the full makeup of your pond in detail, including what's in there now, lay out your goals in detail, and ask the experts. They're more than happy to help!

If you would have not been sleeping on the job and let that Tarpon break you off so quickly you might be singing a differant tune.....LOL

Bobby, ya owe me one so when ya gonna hook me up with one of those Tarpon? Heck a big ol Bull Shark would do. I'm ready for a road trip, gettin trailer fever.

So true, Bobby so let me alter that statement:

I agree the hsb is one of the best fighting fish there is and they are so pretty. In the sunlight their backs are a really pretty blue. Very nice fish all of them.
