I was flying the other day and found out that my F/O carries a portable vise for tying flies. I told him about our ponds and we tied a few flies just to get started. The flies looked great. Here is the one I designed. It swims great in our pond. It was attacked the first time I tossed it into the big pond. I was hooked. I found a Dyna King and some materials on Craig's list and now I have some stuff to get started with. Unfortunately, I think I am going to be very unconventional. I am going to think of flies as very disposable and as a tool to catch fish. I realize the purists will turn their collective noses up at me, but I don't care. I have never owned a tool I could not use to its limits. Flies will be no different. I would like to know your favorite videos of flies being ties so I can get a few good ideas. Knowing that I don't play by the rules all the time is just one of the things I do well, and this should be another great adventure.

That's a good looking fly, Brian. Well done and congrats. It's the ultimate experience catching fish with something you created. Keep us apprised of your future versions.

Bryan, the lmb, chain pickerel and several other fish types would tear that fly up in Caddo lake. Nice Fly Tracy

TJ, I did not tie all of that fly, my friend let me design it and I did tie some of the stuff on, but he made sure it was right.
Tracy, I designed it for the LMB in our big pond. Glad to hear others think its about right. I used our CNBG, and GS as a base. It swims very nicely in our pond. I can make it turn and wiggle. In short, I'm hooked!
The real problem I have is the CNBG will not leave it alone. I am going to make several shorter flies like it today and try them against the CNBG using a No 6 hook.

That looks great, Brian. I don't think it'd survive very long in my pond either!
Now you need to come up with a cool name for it...

I understand why your tyin’ instructor started you on this fly for the basics, being an old standard fly tying style. I tie this style fly for bass with either bar bell eyes or a few wraps of lead wire for depth control and action, with a wider profile - about 4 1/5 inches works for me. A doulbe mono loop weed guard will come in handy as much brush and cover you have in your lake. It will take an 8 wt fly rod or better with a good double haul casting technique to toss this fly. Ya done good! George

I like the design - my SMB and HSB would hammer that sucker!
