Sitting here today thinking I am going to buy a few tip ups and target CC under the ice... Anyone ever done this?... When we were fishing Sunday my son hooked one and so did I, Just couldn't get them landed with the light weight rigged rod.. I even played the one I had for several minutes trying to wear him out.. The minute he saw me and the hole he had to come through, down he went...

Sounds like you are going to have to step up your line test lbs if your goal is to land them. Now if your just looking for a good fight, stick with your rig. Either way have fun.

I've taken several channels through the ice. Always a rush on 2 lb line! Never targeted them purposefully though. I know the Herman clan does, however.
"Forget pounds and ounces, I'm figuring displacement!"
If we accept that: MBG(+)FGSF(=)HBG(F1) And we surmise that: BG(>)HBG(F1) while GSF(<)HBG(F1) Would it hold true that: HBG(F1)(+)AM500(x)q.d.(=)1.5lbGRWT? PB answer: It depends.

I pulled a small 10-12" one through on Sunday.. Never saw the one Mason had hooked, but the one I had on was pushing 5 lbs... I am really just looking for something to add to the fun when we are out there.. Also will be removing some biomass from the pond..

If you were a real man, you'd go noodling for them, under the ice.
Excerpt from Robert Crais' "The Monkey's Raincoat:" "She took another microscopic bite of her sandwich, then pushed it away. Maybe she absorbed nutrients from her surroundings."

We used to catch bullheads on tipups through the ice in Massachusetts.
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

No, I think they work like you said, it's just my pond. Make a pile of snow for an anchor, and use one thru one of the holes in the ice!!

Over the years I've taken a lot of fish through the ice with tip-ups, my Green Hornet jigging rod, and I've speared a lot lawyers (aka burbot/eelpout). But, I've never ever caught a channel catfish through the ice. I've got a bunch of frozen creek chubs in my roadkill freezer.I may try some of them on a tip-up this season on my small put-and-take pond that is stocked with HSB, HBG, and CC. We'll see ...
