As some of you already know I oversee the village owned pond 3 acres. For some time now the village has run their homemade system during the winter months only.....about twenty feet off shore 4 foot deep. The system was built using an old smog pump from a very old truck. Plastic pipe was trenched in and ran to where it is positioned in the pond. Anyone else ever use a home made device such as this? We have recently purchased a display aerator that will placed in the middle of the pond this spring and will be ran all summer long.

Funny you should ask this question. I have been messing around with the smog pumps or I call them air pump, I have a close contact that has been scraping cars here for awhile and has pulled off a couple for me to mess with, trouble I have been running into is finding a small enough one that will turn at a lower horsepower for use with a small amp draw motor, most I have found were vane type pumps and will really put out the air and psi, around 30psi if I remember right? not sure on the volume. Had a nice little pump on a old datsun pick-up but the owner decided he wasn't going to get rid of the truck, I would have like to got my hands on it to see what the drag was like on it and how well it moved air. My thinking on them is that they should run for a long time with little maintance since they are made to run on cars every one of my cars have over 200000 miles on them and I havent replaced one of them yet

Ours is actually more of a deicer as it is basically an open pipe. With the right equipment added to it I am sure it could be made into a great aerator. Next time I get down to the shop I will take a picture of our setup. Standard 110 plug in....seems like a very sound and affordable option for someone that is short in the pocket for a better system. I think this coming spring I may see about running it year round in conjuction with our aerator.

the ones I have messed with that probably need atleast a 1/2 hp motor would really put out the air in say a 9" membrane diffuser I bet. gives me another winter project besides trying to get the 66' stang restored, My wife will be so proud!
