Pond Description:
1.25 surface acres; Max depth 12'-15'; Hourglass shape, West side of pond is the deepest and rises to the shallows to the east (like a swimming pool), trees circle the pond with about a 50 foot clearing from water to trees, wind is limited at water level, no electricity at pond, electricity is about 150 yards away.

Stocking Description:
Plan to stock 1,250 forage fish, plus 12lbs. of fatheads and 80 bass (40 f1's, 25 floridas and 15 native).

Questions:
1) Will this pond most likely need aeration?
2) What type of aeration system would work best?
3) What type of aeration system should be avoided?
4) Would a solar powered system be strong enough?
5) What supplier is recommended?

Thanks!

Most ponds will benifit from aeration but with the influx of leaf litter yours will have it may need aeration.

Here's a post on solar powered by Cecil:

Hey Guys,

All I can say is that system looks expensive.

Keeton Industries pushes a systen that appears to be a typical diffuser system but the power is supplied by a solar panel. It's supposed to be the only 24/hr run time operating solar system and has a battery backup. Looks like a package for a pond up to one acre is about $3500.00, but I'm wondering if you could go cheaper by using you own components other than the solar panel.

The only drawback I see is the smallest system only puts out .90 cfms.

The info can be found at: http://www.keetonaqua.com/SolarAerator.html

If anyone has the capital and know how it seems to me one could come up with a hybrid system of both wind and solar just like the systems used on housed to produce power.

Any entrepeneurs out there willing to take a risk?

You can search using aeration as key word & find alot of experiences & info here!

I'm sure someone knowledgeable will help with your other questions if you can't find the answers.

Thanks Rick. I appreciate the link.

I could use some more information on the size aerator necessary for my pond (details in original post).

In my opinion, the area most in need of aeration is less than three quarters of an acre. The remainder of the pond is around 5' on average. Should I get the aerator rated for an acre and place it in the deep end, expecting only to aerate that area? Or, should I get the larger aerator (2 acres) and expect it to aerate all the way down to the opposite end of the pond?

The solar aerator may be 3 times as expensive upfront, but the cost savings in the long run will theoretically even out.

I couldn't get that link to work. Here's to their home page Keeton Industries .
That's a pretty interesting site.

I installed a 220V powerhouse fountain and light in my 1/2 acre pond. I alos have a high concentration of oak and hickory trees that cause a lot of leaves to enter the water in the fall.

Have been using the powerhouse unit for 1.5 years and it has yet to skip a beat. Here is a link to the place I purchased it.
