On one of our small ponds, 1/2 acre, we have a huge algae bloom. It is so thick around the edges I almost cannot throw the feed to open water. Will this go away by itself?
thanks

Not likely. As it dies and sinks, the dying stuff adds fertilizer for the new stuff.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Tilapia works well, but it is only one choice.

A lot of folks equate "killing it" with "stopping it". It doesn't work quite that way, unfortunately. You can knock it back, subdue it for the moment, but unless steps are taken to address the root cause of the algae, (often excessive nutrients in the water), it will likely return.
Copper based algaecides are another choice.

Around here many used copper sulfate but as I understand it that builds up in the soil over time. Tilapia, but they die when the water temperature drops and must be replaced every year. A combination of Israeli carp and KOI but too many will muddy the water. Lots of water plants but too many can look ugly and curtail fishing. A tadpole pond will work but to get the numbers needed you can't have predictors in the pond that will gobble them up. Combinations of the above can work. Right now I use the combination of plants, tadpoles with minnows and no predators such as bass, etc. I posted this picture in the image section of newly hatched tadpoles eating a fresh batch of algae. I checked the next day to get a picture and the algae was gone.
