Planning to build an 80x40ish foot pond near a small creek approx 15 feet wide. Soil level is about 4 feet higher than the creek's typical water line; should I be reasonably safe to build the pond edge 15 feet away from the creek? Flooding is very rarely an issue, and I plan to build the pond edge up another 3 feet on that side... Erosion has also been stable for the last 5 years with no significant ground lost.

I believe height is more important than width (to an extent). You have to plan for 50 and 100 year rain events to prevent overflow into the pond.

Ah, thanks! I've observed one of the 50 year events, and I should be fine there... Need to see how much of a KO punch one of the 100 year floods would pack. Long as it's a simple matter of cleaning up the mess and re-establishing a balanced ecosystem i'm not too worried about that one either. Just wanted to make sure the side wouldn't bust out one sunny day. Thanks for the info!
