I do not trust the thermometers in my pond. Two feet down is 60 degrees and the surface is showing 63 degrees. The problem I have is that the air temperature in Southern Michigan has not been warm enough, in my opinion, to reach those temps.
Am I reading things right? What do people in Northern Ohio and Indiana, and in Southern Michigan have for water temps?
Thanks, Brian

The suns rays are just as strong today as they will be on Aug 16th.

Thanks, guys. Now the follow up questions. Can I then start treating for my Chara? Also, how far out for tilapia since water temps need to be 60?

Yeah, the Sun has a funny way of warming things up with cooler ambient temps. I'll check in a bit. I just found my DO meter and put a new battery in it. Temp works fine, but according to the %O2 in atmosphere, I should be dead Just needs a new membrane and a KCL recharge. OK, I am waiting on a brain cell, that's obviously doing something else, to tell me where the membranes are. This may take a while, but one cell said "it's up North Stupid", but I don't quite trust that one. That one get's me into trouble all the time Look for a needle in a haystack, and you'll find everything else. Look for everything else, and you'll find the needle!

From my days as a meterology buff and my training in the Air Force, official air ambient temp is actually lower than it is in the sun. That's why air temp has to be recorded in a shaded ventilated box. I believe temps in open air direct sunlight are about 10 degrees warmer. Additionally suspended particles can cause water to warm faster, as in a stained pond vs. clear water and even the color of the bottom of a body of water has an effect.
I was flabbergasted that my black overturned storage tanks that were out of the wind but in direct sunlight were very warm to the touch on bright sunny days. That was this winter!
A black south facing trombie wall with glass ~ 4 inches from it will reach 150 degrees in the winter in bright sun.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

I was dove hunting in Blythe, Ca. on opening day one year. It was HOT. in excess of 100°F out. We'd hunt in the morning and if we didn't limit out, play in the Colorado River until about 2 hr before sunset and then go back out. I remember standing in a flooded ag field and having to look down to see if my feet were in or out of the water. The water was that warm. If you touched any metal part of the gun that was in the sun, you'd drop it like a hot potato.
The dogs would make a retrieve, and just lay in the water panting like crazy.
So, YES, the suns rays can really heat up dark colored things!!!

About a foot down and about 5' off shore, temp settled at 57.3F. It's much colder in the depths tho. Air temp is 52.2F with a breeze coming from Lake MI. Darn Geese have taken over the pond and my Dad has my pellet gun. Bean one with a wad cutter and they will probably shut up! Scott and lassig, ya missed a few
