I do not know much about them, other than I do not want them in my pond. I have lost a couple of stockings of grass carp to them a few years back. I have not seen any lately, but I have heard a calling sound a bit like a large bullfrog. Is this a sound a gator makes to tell others where he is & stay away? I have heard this call from 3 areas of the pond one call after another for about a minute. What other animal might be making this sound? This is a North Florida pond.
Does someone have a suggestion of how to determine if there are gators in the pond without having to catch one? They have been good at hiding till someone starts to feed them. Then they show no fear.

SHine at night for them. You will see the eyes glow out in the water. They usually are out in the middle during the night.

Do you have alot of grown up vegetation around your pond? For them too hide in while making this sound? I'd suggest (if possible) clean up the banks of your pond less spots for them to hide less likely they'd show up or stick around.
I believe in catch and release. I catch then release to the grease.. BG. CSBG. LMB. HSB. RES.

Wow...I thought I had pond problems...there's a new definition of 'pond nuisance' right there.
