I'm swapping some fish with a friend this spring. I'm giving him some of my CBG, and he is giving me some of his LMB in return (some new genetics for my lake).
It is about a 45 minute drive from my place to his. Would the fish be ok in an extra large igloo cooler? Do I need oxygen, something like an aquarium bubbler? Should I put in something to cool the water?
Any transport info or thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks!

An aerator is a must. As far as the cooler being large enough, that all depends on how many fish you plan to transport. Putting a couple of frozen bottles of water will help it keep oxygen. I'd also add in some Please Release Me or similar product or a cap full of peroxide.

You can get portable aerators for $10-15 that fit a cooler or rubbermaid type tub or even a bucket. I have one that runs off a D battery and one that has a 12v plug for your vehicle.

Hey Dan, how's Big Red?
I've done it for short hauls without aeration and had no ill results. Larger fish generally don't do as well. Water temps certainly make a difference. I've added a couple of drops of clove oil, thanks to Todd Overton, and it somewhat sedates them. That certainly seems to make a difference.
Small aerators a inexpensive but, without crowding, you may not need it.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Small aerators a inexpensive but, without crowding, you may not need it. I agree with Dave - transferring smaller less crowded fish in cooler weather is not a problem. For larger fish, a few drops of clove oil in an appropriate size Igloo cooler with O2 system shown in photo below, will safely transport larger species of fish. An O2 system is inexpensive and easy to rig up - I find it indispensable for routine fishing in hot weather conditions as well as transporting fish. Excellent system for resuscitating stressed fish.
