I have a friend (really-- a friend and NOT me) who wants to put a fish feeder on a Louisiana bayou where he owns the land up to the bayou. Two questions:
1) Is it possibly this is illegal or frowned upon by the dept. of wildlife and fisheries?
2) Will the native population of bream and catfish start feeding?

Thanks,
Dan

Sounds like a good way to get a feeder stolen to me.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

I'm not sure about La., but it's O.K. to do that in Indiana. Dad wanted to feed the fish (why, I have no idea - he doesn't fish). I put an extra feeder on the pier, bolting it to the pier, and using a cable through the feeder and locking it to the pier. It took a while because the fish weren't used to pellets (and he was feeding generic floating catfish food - not high fish oil content food). He had Golden Shiners, Bluegills and Carp feeding after a couple weeks. There were LMB there at the feeder too, but not eating pellets, they were picking off the smaller BG and shiners.

The guy doesn't fish either but his kids/grandkids like to fish so that is why he's putting it up.

There aren't many houses on the bayou so not sure the threat of theft but I'll suggest something to deter theft.

Here are a couple of photos of something I designed and built for my pond.

This may be something of interest that can be used.

If you are interested, let me know and I will give you all the details but basically you can take out the pin and twirl it around back to the back, fill feeder, then swing back out.

Nice creativity coupe! Do you still get your feet wet while reaching for the pin, and how easy does it rotate, since the weight is all on one end?

"Forget pounds and ounces, I'm figuring displacement!"

If we accept that: MBG(+)FGSF(=)HBG(F1)
And we surmise that: BG(>)HBG(F1) while GSF(<)HBG(F1)
Would it hold true that: HBG(F1)(+)AM500(x)q.d.(=)1.5lbGRWT?
PB answer: It depends.

Just check with your DNR as laws differ from State to State. I inquired about putting a floating feeder on our lake and our DLNR shot it down citing it would cause too much additional waste in the water.

sprkplug,

Thanks for the comment.

It spins like a top to be honest. I have a 2-3/8" OD piece of pipe that is 3-1/2' long inside of the 2-7/8" OD pipe that is in the ground. Where the 2-3/8" pipi is welded on the plate, there is an area that the weld covers that fits exactly on the inside of the ID of the 2-78" pipe. This was not planned but it just happen to work out that way. So, it stays centered and spins at that point.

You can't see it in the photos but I have a grease zert half way up so I can add some grease from a grease gun. I greased up the 2-3/8" pipe before sliding it inside the larger pipe. The plate also acts as a deterant from creatures as well as a roof to keep water out.

I was suppose to add counter weights, original design, but never got around to it. We have a small boat we ride up to it, when the pond is at full pool, and pull the pin. From the levee, we can reach the other end of the pipe and spend it around.

Coupe

Good stuff. I hope I was not being negative when I said there is a chance a feeder could be stolen. A feeder in a location like that in my area wouldn't last long.

CB, No worries! Depending on location things seem to "walk away" here as well.

CDV, neat ideas on the feeder but (I think) he will be able to place on land or his dock.

Scott, Thanks for the info.

Thanks Zep.

I have plenty of area to put the feeder on the bank but 2 things came to mind, for me.

Critters, I am surrounded by trees, bayous, swamps, etc. We have critters that I think we shouldn't have walking these grounds but nevertheless, are walking, watching, waiting in the depth for a free meal so I elected to put the feeder in the water to lesson the temtation. The feeder is actually over about 10-12' of water. 2-1/2 years with no issues to date.....

People, you will be amazed how people find your belongings and will remove them without thinking twice. I carry tools with me all the time and having a cable wrapped around something on a dock isn't that big of a deal to cut with the right tool or unscew with an battery powered tool. Being over the water, this presents a bit more of a challenge and my deter the honest theif to stay honest. Harcore? may be another story but with increased difficulty, it may offer me a chance to catch them in the act.

Knowing the cost of the feeder and the food within, I would come up with a plan that is managable for you to fill the feeder but yet deter
whomever I can from taking it away.

Think long and hard on what you are willing to risk by putting it on the dock, how to best secure it, what benifits you all will get in return, and finally how much are you willing to lose by putting it where you decide to put it.

Please don't get me wrong but wanted to bring up what crossed my mind and why I did what I did and pass that along to whomever could benifit from the advice. I have to work hard for what I have, give enough away to the goverment already without carrying that over into other people in the area or passing through with my belongings.

Coupe
