This just started showing up while I was outta town last week. None monday..friday all around the banks. Any ideas? Is this FA? Some kinda wraps around the grass/weeds the rest hugs the banks. A little floating about but not too much.

Should I be concerned

?

Thanks
RANDY

Look like filamentous algae that is dying/going to spore. I have seen this where the wind pushing it against the shore rolls the mats into a kind of algae dreadlocks.

I wouldn't be too concerned enough to treat it. As mentioned it is in a declining stage. Your pond is too murky reducing lots of light penetration to have a serious FA problem.

Thanks bill. I have a question for you concerning why the pond is so murky. It is 1/4 acre has a lip around it preventing runoff into pond and has only gambuisa present. It is approx 14 yrs old. I have fished it and no signs of anything but stays turbid. I have owned it 9 months and never more than a few inches of visibility.

Does alum treatment help this? Or is it even a bad thing?

Take 2 clear jars or such (no lid), fill with pond water. Put one in a cabinet and one near a window. This should tell you if its algae, suspended solids or stirred up silt. Look at and sniff the jars in a few days.

A pinch of alum mixed in a jar will let you know if it will work, you can buy small amounts where the spices are sold.

I have at one point when we moved in in march take a jar sample. After around three days all the sediment had settled and water was clear as gin with dirt on bottom. However I only took one sample and it was left on counter near sunlight.

It is well fed but I usually go a month between topping off could this cause the water to become turbid when refilling. What are the main culprits of turbid water? Thanks for your advice

Randy

Ionic inbalance or mechanical stirring of the pond bottom (usually critters or fish).
