First would walleye or sauger grow in southern Indiana, second, I have no clue as were to get them, my fish farming neighbor says that he dont know of any Indiana producers for civilian stocking, and that by the time you got the permits to bring some in the state the fish would die

Depending on if you are in west or east Indiana will depend on where to best go to get or have walleye hauled to you. They are most available in later fall (October) when growers haul them in from WI and MN.

Walleye will grow in IN ponds providing they are relatively LMbass free or low. Bass eat small walleye. Walleye do not compete well with bass. If you are putting them in a pond with bass be sure the stocker walleye are 8"+ to reduce bass eating the stockers. An 8" walleye is not very big in body cross section and basically is shaped like a big cigar. Walleye do not grow well on bluegill as the main forage. If you really want a true walleye pond have no LMbass, (a few SMB are okay) and use yellow perch, shiners, crayfish, fatheads, as forage items. A few RES would be acceptable as bonus panfish.

Walleye don't necessarily need cold or cool water deep ponds, and more importantly they require good dissolved oxygen levels all year long including midsummer when DO tends to sometimes become low due to warm water and excessive vegetation decay. Generally walleye survive better in relatively new ponds compared to old nutrient rich ponds.

I don't know where you're at, but I'm working on getting some walleye this fall from Clear Creek Fisheries in Martinsville....not sure if it will happen, but more interest in this fish probably couldn't hurt the chances!

"Forget pounds and ounces, I'm figuring displacement!"

If we accept that: MBG(+)FGSF(=)HBG(F1)
And we surmise that: BG(>)HBG(F1) while GSF(<)HBG(F1)
Would it hold true that: HBG(F1)(+)AM500(x)q.d.(=)1.5lbGRWT?
PB answer: It depends.

They do turn up sometimes in fish nets in the Wabash river for sure and maybe others. I'm on the Illinois side and know of guys who picked up a few to put in their ponds. Not sure if it is legal or not so check first. If legal, it would be a cheap way to try a couple and see if they survive before stocking them.

I'm in south central Illinois and have found it difficult to get them. However, I should be getting some the first of December. According to my supplier, they don't ship well at all. I talked to a couple guys getting fish this spring, and they were very impressed with the growth and health of walleyes they had stocked the previous year, so I think it's worth a try if you can get them.

I have a .25 acre pond I emptied this year and cleaned out, think maybe Ill fill it up and stock it with Walleye, fatheads , and Perch, it would make a good experiment from what you all are telling me, and at this size and starting with an empty pond it would be easy to control, what do you all think

For your 0.25 ac pond you can use walleye or hybrid striped bass as predators for perch.

I picked me up some yesterday at Logan Hollow Fish Farm in Murphysboro, IL.
