If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

A lesson about limestone and rain. If shallow you can get subsidence.

I guess that the possibility of limestone sinkholes exists nearly everywhere. One of my favorite local public fishing spots is where the Lost River re-immerges after flowing through about 30 miles of underground limestone caverns. I got some real pretty LMB and BG there just last evening.

From the link Ken listed: "The river is listed as impaired for pathogens by the state of West Virginia; this is likely due to the livestock and poultry raising activities throughout the valley."
What does this mean?

It is not something we hear much about anymore. We had significant fish kills, diseases, and intersex fish (male SMB with ovaries) in the South Fork Potomac and South Fork Shenandoah 10-15 years ago. It somewhat affected other waters in the area watershed, but not significantly. Now, except in some very specific contaminated waters, we just have general advisories for certain fish, like carp and large catfish, mostly due to PCB and mercury. Here are two relatively recent links about the issues: Fish Diseases in Chesapeake Watershed Questions Remain After Ten Years

Many salt domes on the Gulf coast are oil and gas producing structures, as well as commercial usage for brine and commercial salt production. Many depleted O&G salt domes are in current use for emergency storage for National Petroleum Reserve.....IIRC George.

I just spent an hour reading about salt domes.
That video of the trees sinking in scares the hell out of me, BTW.
To Hell with Georgia...

The LA sink-hole site is very close to Dudley Landry's place. In fact, the article may reference one of Dudley's relatives.

Both sinkholes are at least thirty miles from me, Kelly, although I did drive near Pierre Part on my way to Plaquemine to get the sprayer that you helped me rig up.
There are thousands of Landrys down here. The one mentioned in the article might be a distant relative but, to find that out, you'd have to trace the family tree of a guy named Pierre who got run out of Nova Scotia a few centuries ago.
George is probably familiar with the science, but I don't understand how a berm would affect subsidence. When the process is completed, many will be happy to have a new lake in the area, unless the salt in the water negatively impacts the surrounding swamp. Interesting stuff.

Also many salt features (domes and others) are leached out and used as natural gas storage facilities. They are leached out with water which has the same effect as rain over time.
