If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

News this morning says that it is still growing(?).

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

I wonder what the soil is like? If it holds water it might become a lake some day or Grand Canyon II? LOL

Likely caused by water on limestone as most sink holes are.

Makes sense but doesn't one usually see water in the bottom? I wonder how far down to the limestone layer there? Ours here is 400 feet.

For sure! I can't believe the LEO isn't keeping people out. The landowner might want to think about liability too.

I miss America where you didn't need government permission to do something like marvel at a cool sinkhole like that. I like that Sheriff.

There is something that makes you know you're alive standing close to the edge of danger.

I say this in full knowledge that most Americans seem to have lost common sense...

Sigh.

Ha! You should have been with me Elk hunting last year then. The guide and I picked/slid our way down a rock slide to a flat rock that was on the edge of the canyon. That rock was no larger than maybe 5' wide by 3' front to back. We sat there looking for any elk that might be wandering thru the canyon. I sat there for a while, with my feet dangling over the edge, but had to be careful moving around as it looked like it was a ways down to the bottom. I dug out my rangefinder and started to take some readings. I was even more careful when I stood up, as the rangefinder said it was about 600 yds straight down, and slightly over 800 yds to the bottom of the canyon. eek It sure didn't look like I was that far up from the bottom!!

That night it snowed about 6" and the guide said we weren't going back to that rock because if we started sliding down that rock slide we wouldn't stop until we were waayyy past that rock that we were sitting on.

Maybe there is no connection. However, the Ogallala Aquifer, which stretches from South Dakota to Texas, and right through that part Kansas, has been dropping significantly in the last 80 years. I believe it dropped about 100 feet from about 1940 to 1980. New rules and more efficient irrigation cut the annual depletion. I've had some long discussions with my older son's in-laws in Nebraska and Oklahoma about it. They range from corn and beef producers to major land developers. As I recall, the Ogallala is still unfortunately dropping somewhere around 2.5 to 3.0 feet per year.

One of my closest friends is part of a long-time well drilling family from Nebraska. He is now 76. His grandfather started the business. For the more than 40 years that he and I worked together, he talked about the consequences of pumping so much water out of the Ogallala.

From my poor memory, I believe that the Ogallala was a saturated underground water reservoir about 200 feet thick, that started at about 100 feet below ground surface in Nebraska, Kansas, and Texas. That was in the great Dust Bowl years.

Maybe somebody with more knowledge about it can provide better info. But, I believe that over half the Ogallala has been depleted since WWII, and continues to be depleted.

I don't know if this huge water depletion is a cause of the big sink holes in the area. It just seems like there could be some connection.

I see your point but what about when the sheriff has to rescue someone at the taxpayers expense or risk the life of a rescuer? The edge of that thing look like it could bury you alive if it went down with you standing on it.

Not the same thing but my dad would get very angry when he was ordered to rescue missionaries and press in enemy territory in Vietnam.

I think you guys are thinking too small. I say build a couple ramps, line up some of those adrenalin craving extreme sports junkies, and jump it for bragging rights.....all on pay-per-view.

"Soar Over The Sink".....live. $49.95

"Forget pounds and ounces, I'm figuring displacement!"

If we accept that: MBG(+)FGSF(=)HBG(F1)
And we surmise that: BG(>)HBG(F1) while GSF(<)HBG(F1)
Would it hold true that: HBG(F1)(+)AM500(x)q.d.(=)1.5lbGRWT?

From the looks of the surrounding terrain, I'd say that sinkhole is a huge improvement.
