Hello everyone! My name is Corinna and we own a 2 acre pond in Muskoka, Ontario. We are hoping that you will be able to provide some advice regarding our pond. It is about 50 years old, 6-7 feet deep, and was dug as an irrigation pond for a farm. We have abundant plant and animal life - frogs, herons, geese (seasonally), otters, and fish. I'm not sure what kinds of fish as we are not really interested in catching them. This year has been particularly challenging pond-wise. We have razor grass that appears to be encroaching on the pond and, I think, curly pondweed that has spread in large clumps. The sediment/sludge layer on the pond is about 8 inches. The pond muck smells terrible! We would love to be able to swim in the pond eventually, but right now we are more concerned that the encroaching plant life will turn our pond into a swamp. We have electricity within 20 ft. We own the pond with a neighbour who also has electricity close to the pond. The neighbour is handy mechanically. We are hoping for a solution that will be effective and not break the bank. $2000 is around the limit.
We have been investigating some solutions but haven't been happy yet: 1. Aqua sphere bacteria (anaerobic?) with circulator (thought that wouldn't aerate the bottom well enough 2. Windmill with aerobic bacteria added - worried about wind and what happens when there's no wind 3.electric compressor/diffuser systems -would love your help on this! How big, what type of diffuser? I would be happy for vendors to email me sales quotes as well! Thanks, Corinna

Welcome to the forum. As a nubee myself here, I have no answers for you. But I can tell you that you've found the best place for pond info. Take your time and read around the forum, you should find what you're looking for, but if not the folks on here are very friendly and willing to help. Good luck.

Another "Welcome" to the forum!
My pond is very similar in size, depth, age and muck (moved here April 2012). Ted Lea Forevergreen has been extremely helpful since day one and got me set up with an aeration system for right around your price range (give or take).
Hopefully he will chime in to get some details from you and offer his assistance, or send him a PM.
You found the best place to seek help so like Taz said, keep reading and asking questions!
