I cannot seem to figure this weed situation out for the life of me. Below are some amateur attempts to snap accurate pictures of the pond/weeds and then again on the only white piece of paper i had available. It appears to be a floating weed with algae junk concentrated on the very top surface layer. I see some groups of it across the pond surface (away from the edge) leading me to believe that its a cluster that somehow got blown away from the heard OR that the weed is completely growing on the surface with no connection to the soil bottom.. I've tried the identifier links with no success. Only seems to make me second guess my selections.
Unfortunately, the last three photos would have possibly provided the necessary level of detail had you left the images in a size-format comparable to the first group of images. Due the to small image-sizes and resolution, I'm unable to take a guess at this plant's ID. Try taking a large-format/close-up/focused image that shows 6-12" of the plant's stem - preferably the terminal growth-point.
Have you checked to see if shipping a sample of your plants to a district biologist for identification is an option in your state? It's an option in mine.
Kelly can do a bang up job of identifying if you get him a good picture but I though I'd present this as an option.
That said if it's one of the Pond weed species i.e. Potomogeton genus it may not matter which one regarding which herbicide to use.
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.
Ok. Thanks guys. I take it that the pictures are not even of enough quality to narrow it down to a handful of different weed types? It may take a week or two for be to get back down to the pond due to work travels, in order to take better pictures. Cecil mentioned that it may not matter which exact type of plant it is (I'm interpreting his post this way at least) as x herbicide would take care of weed z, y, or u.. I would eventually need to know exactly what type of weed it is but wouldn't want to have another couple weeks of growth happening in the pond on top of my turn around of getting the pictures posted and interpreted. Nonetheless, I'll follow you guys advise as the knowledge on this board is nothing short of incredible.
