My 25 yr. old 1/2 acre pond had a die-off of the baitfish 5 days ago.All of them (at least 1000)died. It was 100 plus for 5 days here in west texas. I wasn't running airolator long enough I guess, anyway I am now finding some dead catfisn too. I've not turned airolater off even for a minute since the die-off last week. Why are whats left in the pond still dying and should I be trying to exchange the water as I have a bottom valve. Any advice as I've not had this type of die-off before.

Can you describe the air system you have ? What was the weather - any sudden changes , rain etc. ? Pond depth. Most times a complete kill is not the case and there are some fish left. What about mgt like fertilizer or water quality ?

We have a 1/2 hp 230w airolator moves 50 gpm. Pond is 6 ft. at deepest and 4 ft elsewhere. 1/4 acre oval pond.Had some angel hair but airolator seemed to be killing it as we had dead black algae floating and we were getting rid of it with an overflow at top of water level. It got extremely hot 108 and 105 for a few days and we were running airolator all night and for 3 hrs. during the day. All the forage fish of every size died in 2 days, still getting some large and small catfish.Oxygen tests good about 6 on bottom (opened a bottom flow pipe thats pvc coming from bottom of tank to outside tank with a ball valve to open if needed. oxygen at top is 8, so not sure why fish keep dying.

Once badly stressed, the fish often get secondary infections that kill them. A pond that shallow, and with that heat, they may just be cooking. Any idea of your water temps??

I checked and the water temp is 84 degrees, I only found 1 catfish today. The water is green but it has cleared and doesn't look as heavy anymore. Should I put in some conditioner? or just keep running airolator and fresh water?
