fishing a pond with clear deep water, have not targeted the trout in this pond, what lures/ bait would you recommend?
Small deep diving crankbaits? jig/nightcrawler bouncing deep / power bait? I've been told they sometimes surface for pellets but I have not seen this.

I would try one of these "Li'l Jakes" on 6lb test.

If you're on a boat and can use a depth finder, locate the depth the trout are holding and then utilize a slip bobber and place the bait right in front of their nose. This works for summer time trout. In the spring when water temps are cooler, the trout should be utilizing all depths of the pond.

Thanks, fishing the pond/lake in a week so it will be Spring, so I assume they'll be moving some at varying depths. Will try some small spinners, lil jakes etc.., I've only fished for trout in shallow water on power pait / minnows so this will be different. Not sure how much time I will spend targeting them but hopefully they are active and willing to chase down some baits. Will have access to a boat to try different depths as well, and not just from the shore line.

Trout are easy to catch. The harder part is locating them.

If they are fed an artificial diet stop feeding them for a few days to increase their cooperation.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

I would toss a Little Cleo or two in your magic box:

We never targeted smaller Salmonids like RBT in a pond, so the smallest ones I have are 3/4 oz, which would probably be way too big. Probably 1/3 oz and smaller. Try the Blue/Nickle (HNB) wink

Colors really depend on the conditions tho.

The size comparison in the pic is "Not To Scale", as would be shown on anyone's monitor. So don't let that fool you on actual size.

Not sure if you're keeping the fish but I would suggest single vs. treble hooks if you're releasing them. Treble hooks can really do some damage to soft trout heads.

I also like to crimp the barb down on a single hook if I'm releasing fish. You loose a few but that can't be avoided.

Like Cecil said. If this is c-n-r, Don't use Treble hooks!

If the fish are small, and it get's hooked pretty good, chances are that you will kill the fish trying to extract the hook.

When fishing in my pond I use single barbless hooks too but I've never had a fish die on me or even had one that didn't do so well after being released. Now if the fish swallows the hook it will be a very different story but I have never had a trout swallow the hook and that includes public lakes/streams. I'm not saying that it can't happen just that it's never happened to me.

Mepps, Super Vibrax, Panther Martin, sinking Rapala... Count it down (let it sink) to the bottom and remember how long it took. Let it sink and start reeling at varying parts of your countdown on consecutive casts until you find fish - then target that depth!!!
