Hi All,

It's been awhile since I've been on the forum. I was getting too addicted to the site and with pond topics all together. laugh I spent quite a bit of money digging my own 10 acre lake and stocking it. Now, 4 years later, I'm catching fish and really enjoying it.

I have a couple of problems right now. We've basically had no run off rain here for about a year. My lake is about 4 feet low and I'm just hoping to catch a frog strangler before summer gets here. You guys can't help with that, but I know you would if you could.

My second problem is grass in the lake. I think this stuff came in with wood ducks a couple of years ago and it's way past out of control now. I took some pics and hope you can help me with elimination of at least the majority of this stuff so I can fish the shallows again. grin

I read a bunch on this site about 6 months ago. This stuff does not have a minty smell when rubbed between the fingers. It basically feels like a limp grass and smells like lake water.

Any and all help is appreciated. Feel free to ask questions.

I'll throw in a couple of non grass related pics for your enjoyment. I caught this fish about a month ago. It's just shy of 4 years old.

This Bass weighed a little over 7 pounds.

We had a sure enough gully washer about two springs ago and I think a bunch of my larger Bass went over the spillway and down into the bayou behind the house. I guess that's just one of the downfalls of having a spillway for level control.

Hey Zep,

Thanks for the compliment!!! It was certainly a thrill catching that fish out of my lake. I've been watching them grow and knew there had to be a few in there pushing 7 pounds.

I'm not really trying to manage for a trophy fishery. I just enjoy catching any of the fish I've got. Right now, I have a crappie problem. I didn't put a single crappie in the lake, but I have a ton of small ones in there. I've pulled out 75 in three afternoons of fishing. They really start biting about an hour before dark. I'm also going to take out 50 or 60 of the smaller bass in the next few weeks.

Hey Brian,

Thanks for the ID. I did a little searching and that looks like the right plant.

I saw many different chemicals that supposedly work. Do you know the best way to get rid of it?

I know you're not supposed to kill it all at one time. My lake/pond is probably 7 surface acres at the moment with the low water level. My water is very clear. Most of this grass is growing under the surface.

Can I spray a liquid on the surface of the water where the grass is growing? Will that mix with the water in that area and kill the grass by contact?

Should I spray about 1/3 of the lake at a time to keep from killing too much at once?

I've never used any chemicals in this water, so I'm a bit leary to do the wrong thing.

Thanks Much.

Any of your major herbicides mixed with an aquatic surfactant should do the trick. They all have different restrictions so look up the labels and see which one would be the best fit for your application. If you can inject the herbicide into the weed beds you will get better results. You are correct in the idea of not killing too much at once. Just do a small area at a time and follow the label. Never a bad idea to look into aeration.
