Since it is the time of year for many of us in the north to venture onto the hard water I thought some members might be interested in a website devoted to lake ice. There is lots of very useful information on ice safety and ice science. http://lakeice.squarespace.com/Of note I am not affiliated with this site in any way. I just found it on an ice fishing forum and thought it was neat.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Neat link.
I will be kicking off my pond ice fishing season this weekend. Should have 3" of very clear ice by tomorrow afternoon.

It looks like we finally may see the change in seasons and start to make some ice around here. Our first snow of the year today, forecast at 2-4 inches. However, it's about 32 f. However, the high for Sunday is only 18, with some very cold nights coming, so I suspect open water is about done here.

Great point about having water before ice can form! With my water levels, if we get to much cold, I will be drilling right thru ice and into clay.
