For the past couple of summers my pond is covered with some type of small green vegetation. It gets worse as the summer goes on and even hangs on into winter. It is not as bad in winter but right now about one fourth of my quarter acre pond has this stuff on it. Any help as to what it is or how to get rid of it would be appreciated.

Have you done any fertilizing in order to build up PLANKTON and make the water darker,so unlight can not penatrate to bottom?

Kevin, with the little bit of info here I would guess that you have duckweed, wolfia, or both. They are true plants and not algae. It can be treated chemically with fluoridone, or a diquat, cutrine, and surfactant combo. the fluoridone will give a few seasons of control if you don't get a flush of new plants in. Another option would be to make the habitat unwelcome to it by moving the water, or trying to starve it possibly with alum or maybe bacteria. It thrives in phosphorous rich, stagnant, and warm water. It will outcompete and shade out algae and is said to suffocate out mosquitoe larvae if dense enough. As with everything, identify first before you try anything. fishmgr@hotmail.com

We need to see the plant. Got a digital camera? If so, shoot two photos, one of the pond, a close-up, and another with the plant in your hand. Post the photo here, and someone with identify it. Then, we can get specific how to control it. Do it soon, don't wait until spring.

Bob- Aprx. 3 acre Pond is in Ben Wheeler , Tx. the water is solid with small particles of something suspended in it , also splotches of diff. sizes of a bright green floating alge i guess ?. if you touch it it disintegrates, also a whitish film that coats the surface, and both of these blow with wind on the surface. I am feeding two times a day , starting today 5-3-03. was going to fertilize for the 4th time but with this water was afraid to . Pond is 8ft. at deepest-c-cat.bluegill-bass-some type of minnows-have added threadfin shad , but have not seen any. PH is 7-don't know about alkalinity for sure but think ok.Pond is surrounded by sweet gum & oak trees. water temp. today is 73d. don't live at pond site full time. Hope this is enough info for someone to help. Thanks Harvey
