The side of our pond has a good slope to it. Too much of a grade to cut it with the riding mower. We let it grow out this year and it looks aweful. It just grew into field brush. I want to knock it down and kill it and plant a short growing grass. Something I could mow with the lawn mower once or twice a season, any suggestions?

I don't have a grass suggestion, but if you don't want something to grow tall, and don't mind the look of clover, Dutch White Clover doesn't grow more than 6" tall and might never need mowing. It fills in the bare areas pretty quickly too. If you're concerned about it spreading out, then you'll either have to hit it with a broadleaf herbacide like 2,4-D or keep looking for a grass variety.

I planted the back of my dam in the spring before drought with clover and it was beautifull. The deer loved it too.

Do you have to bury clover seeds when planting or can you cast on top of the existing soil?

I just pitched it out on freshly covered with black dirt pond dam. But it was new and soil was still tilled. Watered it every day when it got dry. Outgrew all the scotts grass I planted on top of dam. I think if you got it pitched out in early spring it would grow fine with no tilling. Weedeat all the weeds down or burn them this winter first though. Burning them would prob work best.

Cast on top. If buried, no more than 1/8" (that's hard to do).

There is also a thing called "no-mow grass". However, it does need mowing once a year to keep it maintained. Some of the prairie seed companies carry it.

I have no experience w/it, but you might consider buffalo grass. Check out Stock Seed Farm out of Nebraska. I planted Ladino clover and have been quite happy with it. As for sowing, many old timers snow seed clover. In late winter around the last snow, spread your seed, and the receding snow will pull it in the ground, ensuring better germination. Clover seed is tiny. As noted, it also is great for wildlife, and my bees are happy too. There are also short varieties of wildflowers.

Any particular variety of clover? I have sowed arrowleaf clover and it spreads very quickly and the stems are like baling wire... I had a pond dug last October-November and just broadcasted rye grass seed over the back side of the pond dam and it made a good cover.. I planted it very thick. It is dormant now and is not very pretty, but I'm sure it will re-seed itself and be back this fall-winter... I do not mow it, just like to watch it wave in the breeze....
Edited to say I noticed you specified Ladino....
