I'm looking for a good trash pump to drain a ~.2 acre pond and for filling a IBC tote with water for the garden once in a while. I don't need anything huge or fast... just durable. Thanks for any advice.

I've had several of them. Only Honda motors seem to hold up.

I have a 20 year old Honda pump. During a flood, it got swamped and I ordered another one. In the mean time I cleaned the old one up and continue to use it. I did not notice that the new pump that I bought had a Honda engine but a Northern pump until I needed two pumps at once and started to use the new pump. The new Honda engine runs great but the Northern pump started leaking within days. It appears pressed onto the engine shaft, so I can not even figure out how to fix the leak. Bottom line - Buy an all Honda unit!

I have had a 5hp 2" Honda pump for several years and it runs great. I frequently put a 20 gallon external fuel tank on it and it will run for two days straight without running low on oil. It has been submerged twice, both times no water in the crank as Honda's are sealed very well. I figure I have at least 3000 hrs or more on it.

My Subaru/Robin 3" pump failed after about 500 hours on it.

Whatever you buy make sure it has an oil-low shutoff on it other wise it is too easy to run them out of oil and sieze them up.

How much should one expect to pay for a pump like this?

If you have fall from pond to wherever youre wanting to drain water to. garden hoses and gravity will work alot better than you can imagine once you get them to siphon which is really easy and cheap to do

I know it's getting monotonous, but get a Honda, Northern Tool has a good selection. Think I paid around $500.

I have dealt with almost every variety of trash pump available. As mentioned before, go with a honda engine and watch the pump end... The mechanical seals in the cheaper pumps are exactly that, cheaper. You will see seepage from where the engine shaft enters the pump end. Hands down, go with a complete honda pump or with a wacker pump with a honda engine... You will not be disappointed. Just remember not to run the trash pump dry. These smaller pumps do not have an oil resevoir to keep the seals cool and lubricated, so they are relying entirely on the water in the pump end. If they are run dry for any period of time, the mechanical seal will heat up and leak. Good luck!!!

When we renovated my pond we used a Mitsu motored pump until it tipped on it's side one day and burned up the motor due to oil starvation. Beating a dead horse here, but the Hondas have low oil shut-offs.

Like everybody says get a Honda! I got mine at TSC several years ago. Still runs fine. In fact I'm going to crank it up in the morning to drain a .62 acre pond down about 3 feet to seine it as my seine isn't deep enough at pool level.

Just a thought.... GO WITH A HONDA MOTOR/PUMP!!!!!!!!

However, remember if you want to "throw" water, i.e. sprinklers, etc. for seeding, perhaps, you will need a high speed pump. A Honda will be $750 or so

Honda's are great engines, but I wouldn't pass up a pump equipped with a Briggs' Vanguard either......

The discharge hose in the highway drainage ditch adjacent to my pond. The blocks are obviously to keep the hose from jumping all over the place as there is a lot of force at over 200 gpm.

Did some checking online and it looks like a Wayne pump.

Anybody know anything about 1 inch pumps? I've never owned or used one. I don't currently own a pump and rarely have a need for one. However, I need to alum a couple of ponds and the terrain and location aren't real conducive to hauling around a 2 inch pump and barrel. Then there's the price of the hoses.

How far will the stream of the one inch pump "shoot"?

The only thing that I'd change on Cecil's system is the intake. I found that leaving it on the bottom of the pond in a bucket would eventually suck up enough sand to clog the intake pipe. I fixed that problem by floating the suction end inside a rather large innner tube. It kept the suction screen near the top of the water.
