I have some hybrid bluegill in my pond which I am in the process of removing. I am trying to get to just bass and true bluegill so I keep the hybrids when I catch them. My question for the forum is this.... Can the hybrids, which are mostly male, fertilize the eggs of a female true bluegill? If yes, what sort of hybrid does that create. Does it have a large mouth? I am wanting to get rid of all bluegills with a large mouth.
Thanks!

There is conflicting evidence (studies)on if a HBG can backcross with either parental species. My best guess is they can but in limited amounts with uncertain viability in the FX offspring. See this link for pics of what to look for. http://forums.pondboss.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=290003&page=1

In my pond their are lots of HBG - and my belief is yes they can cross back. All of the photos on the link above I have seen in my pond and then some. I am also trying to get rid of the HBG but it's not a overnight thing. Kinda depends on the size of the pond and your budget.
