I need some education - what am I looking for in the water quality aspect in my Michigan pond? Is there any knowledge to be gained by testing my water? Who do you take your water samples to? There is a local lab here in town that I took my well water sample to when I drove my well to be sure it was drinkable. Should I start here?

FYI - Go Michigan State!

I sent my water samples to Texas A&M. Its about $20 for routine testing, $30 for additional metals testing. The basic water anaylsis test for: Conductivity, PH, Na, Ca, Mg, K, CO2, HCO3, SO4, CI, B, Hardness, and SAR. The additional test includes: Zn, Fe, Cu, Mn, and total P.

While this means little to me, it is a useful tool to a pond manager who can interpret the results and help make recomendations for your pond. I'd say for a mere $20, the info is well worth it.

Call the Texas A&M Univ., Extension, Soil, Water and Forage Testing Lab at (979)845-4816. They can send you the proper forms instructing you how to take water samples and where to send them.

I would start with the local lab. Swimming pool places can generally do it. What I generally pay the most attention to is alkilinity and PH.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.
