Good Morning!
My name is Dave Wieland! Recent retired to southern Iowa to be with our kids! Live on 9 acres with a approx 3 acre pond! Just on reading in the forum, figured my pond is upside down with too many LMB s! Just catch a lot of 6 to 10 inch LMB's ! I stocked BG's last fall and suspect they were expensive food for the LMB's! The pond has three inlets with depths to 12 feet! Two of the inlets are heavy brushed ditches were the water is 2 to 12 inches deep! This spring want to purchase several hundred BG's and put them in the ditches and protect them from LMB's by putting christmas trees across the water to keep the bass out! Leave this in till they are ready to move out into the pond! The other thing will be removing 8 to 10 inch LMB's from the pond!
Does this sound like a plan or is there a better way? All ears! I am not looking for record size fish just a balanced pond!
Dave
PS: I do enjoy all the post especially those on fish structure!

Dave,

You mentioned that you stocked bluegill last fall and they evidently got hammered by the bass. Stock larger sized bluegill next time and let them reproduce for you. Your 6-10" bass can touch 6" stocker bluegill. Create the habitat and work on thinning the bass. If your budget can be stretched then also stock smaller sized bluegill for the main purpose of giving your bass a snack. You might also stock golden shiners for that purpose. Lots of options. Where at in Iowa? We roll through Iowa about a half dozen times per year doing fisheries surveys and writing plans for folks.
