...what does it mean?

One of my dogs, Boone, is liking his paws excessively.

He's a larger dog, about 140+ lbs.

Anyone know what this might mean?

Usually it means the paws are sore and bleed or something is stuck in the pads of the paws or in between the pads.

He's licking all four of his paws. He doesn't seem to have any cuts or wounds on any of his paws.

I'm hoping it's not some kind of indication of diabetes or something else.

Perhaps a trip to the vet is in order. Just curious, is this something recent or more of a chronic problem?

More recently, say, the last week.

We'll contact the vet tomorrow, but I thought I'd see what you all think.

I know we have a few vets on the forum. claybird, where art thou?

It's allergies actually. Did you recently change it's diet or environment at all? Try giving him some Benadryl, should be ok.

Hey Sunil,

I would take Boone to the Vet, and a qualified one at that!

Don't really know what the problem is, but the Benadryl fix is not for dogs, if you care for them! All you are going to do is get them stoned!

Vets actually recommend Benadryl quite often. My wife works at our Humane Society alongside veterinarians. It's quite common for this to happen with dogs. Has with ours and this is what she does and it works. Certainly a good suggestion to see a vet though. Better safe than sorry.

Omaha is correct. Our Boston does this until they are pinkish right up to her elbows.

I am out of this one!

Good luck Sunil, and hope Boone gets proper diagnosis and treatment.

Thanks for all the input. My wife says she changed one of thier foods, but that was months ago. Boonie's had a quite a bit of turkey since Thanksgiving, but he'd had the paw licking thing going on longer than that.

My inlaws had a boston terrier, Charlie, that loved to lick his paws. And when he was done, he's lick your feet too if you let him. Father-in-law love that dog. He'd get between the toes and everything!

Before you click on the link below you have to ask yourself...

"Is this a real website or is JHAP just messing with me?"

Knowing my past behavior, you must be sitting there, a nervous bead of sweat running down your face, as your finger hovers over the mouse button. Indecision sets in. Your finger begins to twitch. I know what you are thinking....will this link provide me with essential information or have I just been punked by JHAP.

So I have to ask you....

Do you feel lucky, well do ya punk?

If I go there and get a virus, we'll be seeing each other sooner than expected!!!

Boone leads a very stress free life, I think.

That was a good website, JHAP.

We saw the canine equivalent of Dwight's Venison-Pastrami-looking ankle on the home page.

Glad I could help. I hate to see anyone's pet suffer.

I wouldn't intentionally lead anyone to a website that contained a virus. I've had the occasion to battle computer viruses more than once and it's not fun.

Protection from malicious viruses is the very reason that I did not refer you to....

Cheap shot at Bski because I'm bored this morning.

Our yellow lab licks his paws consistently. It is from allergies. We do give him Benadryl as the vet suggests and it helps a lot. A change of diet to lamb based also seemed to help. Our vet also recommended taking a wet wash cloth and wiping his feet which relieves it.
Since this is a pond forum...our labs love to swim in our ponds and the clay in the water seems to coat and relieve thier skin conditions. When we return from the ranch the dogs don't scratch or lick the way they usually do.

lots of good advice here so far, in the spring, one of my past dogs would get allergies from the chemical in the grass that was heavily coated on it when it was in full growing mode, Vets have told us grass allergies in dogs, very common! But..its not spring and grass should be done growing now so lets move on to another situation I had with a Blue Tick Bitch I had. she would often get sick and only a cortesone shot would bring her around, her pads would be hot and swollen and several different vets over her whole life had tested her for everything including Lyme Disease at least 4-5 times, never found anything and then over that 10 year period, Lyme disease got way more attention and vets and stuff became more knowledgable about it and they knew that when you tested it, there was a 24 hr or so window where it would be "active" and once the dog was "sick" the virus had already peaked and was no longer active so the tests were coming back negative, so as we got more familiar with her symptoms, she would start licker her paws/pads, we got her in ASAP and found she had some of the highest results positive for Lyme they had EVER seen, Problem found!! so then it was a major dump of antibiotics everytime there was a flair up and the last 3-4 years of here life went by with no problems, she even had her pads split a few times from the swelling/bleeding everywhere.

Just food for thought.....
I pray you get it figured out and a healthy puppy is yours for many years to come.

Actually, we never contacted the vet. We are changing Boonie's food back over to what he grew up on, so we'll see.
