Howdy to everyone from Texas. I have been reading this forum for a long time. It is an excellent source of research, and that is what I have been doing for several years now in anticipation of having my own place to buid a pond or two.

Last year about this time, we purchased 68 acres of land in East Texas. Fifty acres of it are primarily a tree farm, but will also double as a wildlife refuge and trails for us to ride around on our UTV. The other acreage is partially wooded and partially pasture. It is very hilly terrain on all the acreage, and I have picked out several sites for small ponds for wildlife. But my main objective is the two larger ponds I am currently working on. I have no creek to provide water, but there are several acres of watershed that will feed the ponds. I also have plans for a solar-powered water pump in a second drilled well to keep the ponds filled in drought conditions.

I am currently concentrating on the upper pond, which will receive the majority of the watershed. It is approximately a third of an acre and will serve as a settling pond. The overflow from it will feed the larger pond, which I plan to stock. It should be about one and a quarter acres in size, at least. It may be larger when I get going on it.

This is my dream. When I was about 17 years old, I worked on my next door neighbor's farm one summer, and he had me build a small tank for watering cattle. I used an old Ford diesel tractor, a disc, and a straight blade. I had a blast building it and vowed that one day I would build a pond of my own. Here I am, 43 years later, and I'm living my dream.

I have read and researched for years now, and hoping that I will be able to put it all to use and build a successful pond or two. I plan to post some pictures here to document my progress, as time permits. I still work for a living, so I only get a chance to work on this project on the weekends. I have a new 38 HP John Deere tractor with loader, a box blade, and a dirt scraper. I also have a small Komatsu dozer that I bought used. It has no problems at all and does an excellent job moving dirt.

Thanks to all who have posted in this forum. It has been very interesting reading, and I love looking at all the pictures. As they say, they are worth a thousand words. I hope my future postings will be of some help to others along the way.

Welcome to PB Rancher.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Thanks Dave. I have a question. Where in the forum is the best place to start a topic for my pond construction with pictures and progress reports?
