Pond Renovation Oct 2010 - May 2011

My small pond as it was in October 2011. The backhoe operator dug it out in about 4 hours. I planted seed on the exposed clay, and stocked 40 trout in April. The pond is approximately 7' to 8'deep.

Turned out nice.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Thanks Dave. It's a small pond but I enjoy it. Surprisingly I haven't lost any trout yet, at least I haven't found any belly up. Not sure if such a small pond will carry enough oxygen over our long Nova Scotia winters. Maybe I should catch a few out before it freezes over? It's source of water is from both underground springs and an over surface spring that feeds it from the north end.

Seems like trout won't survive there without any additional oxygen during the winter. If you don't think about aeration then probably catching all them out is the best solution.

Just an update...several years later. The trout survived the inital stocking. Still a few in there, a few got to about 15". Had some issues in August 2012 with gill lice, so I kept every trout I caught that had the lice. Looks like the remaining fish are clean, so far anyway. The big ones I caught this spring were eating yellow spotted salamanders.
