got my 1.5 acre lake stocked back in feb. I got 750 BG. There were a couple of hybrid bg that got mixed in but not much. They have spawned because there are little BG everywhere. I caught this fish and was wondering if it was a BG or a green sunfish. There shouldnt be any Green sunfish in there. If there were some green sunfish mixed in then will it hurt anything. Can you eat green sunfish. Will they get big or take over. I also stocked 100 CC and 100 LMB. I know that the LMB spawned because i see several small LMB and they were 6 to 8 in when put in. thanks
i have a hard time telling the difference between Bg hybird Bg and green sunfish. Im trying to learn just didn't buy any green sunfish and was hoping they were not in there.
I hate to disagree, but I'm seeing green sunfish , instead of HBG in that pic...
"Forget pounds and ounces, I'm figuring displacement!"
If we accept that: MBG(+)FGSF(=)HBG(F1) And we surmise that: BG(>)HBG(F1) while GSF(<)HBG(F1) Would it hold true that: HBG(F1)(+)AM500(x)q.d.(=)1.5lbGRWT? PB answer: It depends.
The color, the long slender shape, and the huge mouth, all scream greenie to me. So much so, that I was going to say this photo is a "classic" shot of a GSF.
IF there's any BG genetics there, I feel it's miniscule.

Urup, was this an existing pond, or did you build it yourself? Are there any other BOW's that feed into it? I was just wondering if the GSF came in with your stockers, or if they found there way in through other means.
If they, (or it), came in with your stocked fish, then their numbers are probably low. If there is a creek, or other water that feeds your pond, there might be more. If the pond was stocked with these fish in an earlier time, and no predators were added to keep them in check, then who knows how many there are. Do you, or have you, caught more?
The general concensus is that GSF will eventually succumb to the BG and LMB presence. If there is a constant influx of new, adult individuals entering your pond, then I am unsure if this would still hold true, or if you might expect to have a resident population of greenies.
I think they taste similar to BG, and used to eat them all the time when I was a kid, fishing the creek that ran through all the farms in our neighborhood. Except that no one called them GSF. Everyone I knew called them the same, quaint name.... "Old Fashioned Bluegill"

This is a new lake. Stocked in feb of this year. There is no run off from other ponds or creeks within 1/2 mile. The only way is that they were mixed in with the stock of fish or the blue heron brought them in somehow because i have seen a few of them birds out there.
I stocked 750 BG 2in to 3in and 100 LMB 6in to 8in at the same time. I know that the bass were supposed to be stocked later but the fish were hard to get to me. The fish are doing good because i see them everywhere when i feed and see minnows everywhere that are smaller than the ones that i stocked. Today i seen over 1000 baby fish that were 1/4 in long. They were everywhere around the post on my dock.
If these are green sunfish mixed in will it hyrt anything.
urup, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. If there's no other water entering your pond then you should be fine. Your bass should handle things quite nicely. It appears the greenie was just a hitchhiker with your stockers.
