i have a 1.5 acre pond that is overpopulated with small bluegill and green sunfish i could add bass but i wanted to diversify my fishing ponds
If i put smallmouth bass in the pond would they cut down the sunfish
and would they spawn
another option would be Hybrid Striped Bass would they be able to live with the smallmouths without out competing them.
one more quick question we have a 1 to 1.5 acre pond that has largemouth, bluegill, and some catfish ( only 10 catfish and 20 largemouth) would smallmouth make it there?
thanks

SMB are not nearly as effective at control sunfish as LMB. They will to an extent, but if you goal is to begin thinning out stunted sunfish, LMB would be a better option. Add in that you are pushing the far extremes of where SMB would do well I would say go with LMB. SMB have much more requirements to pull off a successful spawn that LMB. There has been a lot of info shared on here about that. Do a search of the archive and utilizing the search engine to get more information if that is the route you end up going. Also, several articles were written by Bill Cody last year on SMB in the magazine. You can request back orders of them...

HSB and SMB and for that matter, LMB will compete with each other to some extent. However, HSB generally are pellet trained and will stay pellet trained, so if you feed pellets you can often limit their competition with LMB or SMB.

In your last question, you would have to stock advanced sized fingerlings, as in at least 8"+ and I'd really shoot for 10"+ SMB to have them have a chance of "making it". I really think MS is pushing it for SMB in a 1.5 acre pond. How deep is the pond? Is it spring fed?
