I posted this with my intro post w/ no replies so maybe it will do better here.
I dug my pond two months ago. A 3/4 of acre pond that is about 2/3 full. I bought and applied some liquid fertilizer from Dunn's (10-34-0) a gallon at a time about 15 days apart starting in late May. I just poured the stuff straight in spread out in different areas of the bank. It seemed to work but i have since applied with a water hose application sprayer.
The first couple of pour in applications apperared to result in a bloom; green streaks throughout the water column that moved around (Pretty neat!). This only lasted a day or two. Immediately afterward the pond cleared considerably (was really cloudy). I have yet to make a secchi disk so i can't quantify the clarity improvement.
So how long do the blooms last? Should I be seeing more blooms? Should I be concerned if i don't see them? Are they always obvious? How often shoudl i fertilize? Will lack of apparent blooms alter that?
Friday I added about 30 lbs of FHM. The Herrons must have heard the dinner bell, have had several all weekend. And, i have only seen a couple of FHM since. Hopefully they are hiding out. I'd guess any that died were quickly consumed by the new unwelcomed guests so i can't tell what my survival rate was.
I have an abundance of watter bugs and was hoping the FHM would decimate them immediately. No change yet.
A little guidance here please.
