Whatever the Wr, that is one healthy fish. What makes them so fat?

That's about as pretty a coloration as I think you can get for a LMB. Very nice fish!

Catmandoo, this fish came from a pond down stream from a pond that has had LMB in it for over 50 years. The reservoir was created about 10 years ago and is about 5-6 acres. I didnt even know there were fish in the reservoir until this year. Evidently, the fish washed down the creek from the other pond. This is how all the fish look in the pond. Last time I went fishing I caught 10 of them that were very similar. I have never stocked the fish nor any forage fish. So the question is what are they eating? Honestly, I think that the population of bass in the pond is relatively low. I think they have been feeding on themselves more then anything. Past that your guess is as good as mine. The reservoir is completely unmanaged.

Take a real close look at that LMB. It is not very plump. Actually the belly is a little flat or even concave. The pelvic fin and the reflection of clouds in the water obscure the true outline of the belly. If bass migrated downstream it is a good chance other fish also made the migration into the unmanaged pond. LMB often tend to overpopulate ponds. When LMB are the only fish in a pond they eat a lot of their offspring and do not often get as large as the one in the picture unless their numbers are reduced and the pond is relatively productive. I suspect there are 1 or 2 other fish species present as prey items.

Bill, The pond they came from has no other known species other then LMB. While I agree with you on the empty stomach, I have weighed and measured multiple bass from this pond and most are 100-125 range on the weight to length charts you guys have had links to here. The older pond is over populated and you can really tell. This pond being younger, I dont think its had a chance to over populate yet. Although, the concave stomach may be because they may have just spawned. Not really sure though.
