I just got my water test results from TAMU and it looks like my Na (sodium) is high ....168. Alkalinity is 309 and TDS is 637. Now the next question is "Who can tell me what I need to do?"

Are you in a heavy limestone area?
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

It is mostly red clay, but there is some red "river rock" that is softer than limestone, but is very similar. Is the Sodium at 168 ppm too high for brim and LMB?

In what form is the Sodium? Elemental Sodium is a highly volatile and reactive metal. Maybe I'm ignorant, but I have never heard Sodium and any form of aquaculture mentioned in the same sentence nor could I find any link between the two on Google.

Salt is a form of Sodium, and there are a number of uses for it in aquaculture, depending on the concentration.

Salt is a form of Sodium, and there are a number of uses for it in aquaculture, depending on the concentration. I am very familiar with NaCl and its use in aquaculture. Aquatext ( http://www.aquatext.com/dicframe.htm) lists 10 Sodium compounds used in aquaculture. My question is-What is TAMU referring to as Sodium in their test results? It certainly isn't Salt as those readings are over 5 times the salt level in ocean water.

I don't think I recall alk as high as 309. What did TAMU say with the tests? Any analysis? PH?

Dave ..the pH was 8.06. TAMU give a range of "V. limiting......Limiting......Acceptable." The Alkalinity of 309 ppm CaCO3 is between Limiting and Acceptable on their scale. I will try to scan the complete report and post it.

I also sent a sample to Overton at the same time, but have not heard anything from them.

What would happen if I added 12 tons of gypsum? Pond is about 1 surface acre.... maybe 10' average depth.

Scott, I think that PH is absolutely acceptable..
On alkalinity we usually try for anything over about 30 or so.

Don't know. I've never thought about too high.

Sorry I missed this. Any update from Overton ? 200 ppm alkalinity is ideal for gamefish. That salt amount is not a problem. I question the 2 ppm hardness # in view of the alkalinity #. This link may help some. https://srac.tamu.edu/index.cfm/event/CategoryDetails/whichcategory/25/
