Planning on putting a few common and mirror carp when the ponds done, just wondering how deep a pond needs to be for these guys to survive winter. This year we had about 20-24 inches of ice on all the ponds, so how much depth does a carp need to survive the winter?

Carp are tougher than most fish went it comes to D.O. levels dropping and will survive when gamefish don't. That said, it's actually cheaper to run a small compressor and diffuser in the shallow end of a pond to prevent winterkill vs. the extra excavation. That's what I do and it works for me most of the time and would probably work 100 percent of the time for carp. Why do you want carp in the pond? Most people avoid them for several reasons. They have negative effects on a pond although they are a lot of fun to catch.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Koi are carp. Fancier but still carp.
