Getting much closer to starting the pond. Definitely gonna happen this summer. Nowhere have I found as much comprehensive info on all aspects of ponds as I have here. But now for more questions...

First off, I'm intrigued by siphons and it appears they will transfer water at a much higher rate than drop-inlet pipes of same diameter. But the question is, How much more? I haven't been able to find a calculator online for estimating flow from a typical pond siphon.

I've picked the brains of alot of contractors around here and they've all done lots and lots of drop-inlets, but nobody has done any siphons.

Go to the Pond Boss home page and, under Resources, find a company called Pond Dam Piping. Contact them.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

The claim that I have always seen for siphon systems increase flows is 1.5 times the pipe diameter. That is a 6" pipe at full siphon will move the volume of a 9" pipe, 8" act like 12", etc.

Appreciate the replies. Spoke to Keith at Pond Dam Piping yesterday -lots of good info, but I guess there may be no easy way to predict siphon flow rates. From what research I've been doing, I'm starting to pick up on the idea that its not gravity pulling the water down the backside, but the difference in pressure between the intake and the outlet that drives the flow. So as the water depth changes, so will the rate of flow. Does that sound right?

andedammen - thanks for the link! However, I don't have excell on my home computer, so I'll have to wait to try it out at work, tomorrow.

yes i believe your right same goes for a riser just different figuring methods. they figure pipe size, riser size, pipe length, riser inlet, pipe to inlet of riser and pipe outlet elevation to determine flow on a riser type system it actually pulls the water like a siphon but the siphon system can drain ur pond if it aint to deep and that could be handy
